One of the best things about living in the Kalyan–Dombivli belt is how many gorgeous weekend getaways sit within a few hours' drive. With a clean, fully-insured self-drive car you skip the crowded trains and rigid cab schedules — you leave when you want, stop where you like, and drive back on your own terms.
Here are five of our favourite self-drive road trips, roughly in order of driving time from Kalyan.
1. Lonavala & Khandala (~2 hours)
The classic monsoon escape. Wind through the Sahyadri ghats, chase waterfalls at Bhushi Dam, and sip cutting chai with a view of the valley. A 5-seater hatchback or sedan is perfect here, though the twisty ghat roads are even more fun in an SUV like the Creta.
2. Alibaug (~2.5 hours)
Beaches, forts and fresh seafood. Alibaug is an easy coastal run that's ideal for families — pack the kids into a 7-seater Ertiga or Innova and make a day of Kihim and Nagaon beaches.
3. Bhandardara & Wilson Dam (~3.5 hours)
For a quieter, greener escape, Bhandardara's lake, dam and star-filled night sky are hard to beat. The roads are scenic but remote, so a comfortable diesel SUV with good ground clearance makes the drive relaxed.
4. Malshej Ghat (~2.5 hours)
In the monsoon, Malshej turns into a curtain of waterfalls and clouds. It's a shorter trip that still feels like a proper adventure — great for a spontaneous Sunday drive.
5. Igatpuri & Kasara Ghat (~2 hours)
Green hills, lakes and camping spots, all a short hop up the Kasara ghat. Igatpuri is a favourite for a laid-back overnight trip.
Tips for a smooth self-drive trip
- Book your car a day or two ahead on weekends and long weekends — the popular models go fast.
- Carry your driving licence and a government ID; keep digital copies handy too.
- Start early to enjoy the ghats before traffic and to make the most of daylight.
- Return the car with the same fuel level to keep things simple and transparent.
